Rooted in a tradition of compassion and dedicated care, Avon Oaks is not just a community—it’s a family legacy of compassionate care that has flourished since 1965. When Dick and Betty Reidy purchased what was then a fledgling nursing home, they envisioned a vibrant community centered on love and meticulous care. Betty, a skilled Registered Nurse from St. Joe’s Hospital in Lorain, brought her medical expertise and a deep passion for elder care, ensuring every resident felt truly at home.

Building a Legacy of Compassionate Care:

The Reidy family’s commitment transformed Avon Oaks into a beacon of warmth and care within the community. Their children — Joan, Richard, and Judy—grew up within the walls of Avon Oaks, learning the values of empathy and service across every department. This unique upbringing ingrained in them a profound understanding of the nuances of long-term care, which they carried into their adult lives and professional roles.

Innovative and Inclusive Care:

In 1985, Avon Oaks witnessed a significant evolution under Joan’s leadership. Following her mother’s retirement, Joan, a compassionate nurse, became the Administrator. She pioneered the integration of intergenerational care by establishing the first childcare center within a nursing home in Ohio. This groundbreaking initiative brought together our community’s youngest and eldest members, creating an atmosphere of familial love and mutual enrichment that continues to resonate through the halls of Avon Oaks.

Expanding with Heart:

2003 marked another milestone with Joan and her siblings’ significant remodel and expansion. The addition of Assisted Living facilities allowed Avon Oaks to offer a more comprehensive range of care services while maintaining the homey spirit instilled by their parents. This expansion was not just about adding space but about extending the Reidy family’s commitment to providing a safe, joyful, and loving home for residents and staff.

Today’s Avon Oaks: A Continuation of the Reidy Family Vision:

Today, Avon Oaks remains a symbol of the legacy left by Dick, Betty, and their children, who nurtured a culture that transcends the typical care setting. We are proud to continue that legacy of love and expert care. The current Avon Oaks is where the lines between a care facility and a home blur, where staff members are as much a part of the family as the residents themselves. Our doors are always open, inviting you to become part of our extended family, where every day is an opportunity to experience joy, laughter, and the comfort of knowing you are home.
